Search volume is the average number of times a keyword is searched per month, usually in a specific country. It tells you how much demand exists for a topic before you spend anything creating content for it.

Search volume answers the first question any content plan has to answer: does anyone actually look for this? It is expressed as a monthly average — normally a rolling twelve-month mean for one country and one language — so a term with 8,000 searches a month in the US might have 200 in the UK and none at all in Slovakia.

The number is an estimate, not a meter reading. Tools derive it from Google's own advertiser data, clickstream panels, and modelling, and each vendor's figure differs. Google Ads Keyword Planner also buckets volumes into ranges (10–100, 1K–10K) unless you are spending money, which is why two tools can disagree by 2x on the same keyword and both be defensible.

An average also hides shape. Seasonal terms — "black friday deals", "tax return deadline" — spend most of the year near zero and spike for a few weeks, so the annual average understates the peak and overstates every other month. Trending terms move the other way: the average lags the reality, and a keyword that only exploded in the last quarter looks smaller than it is.

The practical play is to stop treating volume as a ranking of what to write. High volume with the wrong intent converts nobody, and a 90-a-month query that describes your exact product can be worth more than a 20,000-a-month term you will never rank for. Read volume next to difficulty and intent, and judge a topic by the total volume of its whole keyword cluster rather than one head term.

Examples

  • “Project management software” — 40,500/mo in the US: high demand, but page 1 is owned by category giants.
  • “How to run a sprint retrospective with a remote team” — 170/mo: tiny, but it describes a buyer with a problem you can solve today.
  • “Christmas gift ideas” shows ~30,000/mo as an annual average and closer to 200,000 in November — the average is nobody's actual month.

Common questions

Is search volume accurate?

It's a modelled estimate, not a measurement. Treat it as an order-of-magnitude signal — the difference between 100 and 10,000 is real; the difference between 880 and 1,000 is noise.

Why do different SEO tools show different search volumes?

Each vendor blends Google's advertiser data with its own clickstream panels and models the gaps differently. Pick one tool as your reference and compare keywords within it rather than across tools.

Does high search volume mean high traffic?

No. Volume is searches, not visits. Zero-click results, AI Overviews, and ads absorb a large share of many SERPs, and only the top few organic positions earn meaningful clicks — so your realistic traffic is volume × your expected click-through rate.
